It’s the perfect time of the year to be exploring Abelana Game Reserve on horseback as spring is firmly in the air and the bush is slowly coming alive with the promise of new life! The knob thorns are in bloom, as are the sjambok pods with their fragrant blossoms filling the air with the most wonderful, sweet scent… it won’t be long until numerous bush babies start to arrive as animals drop their young!
Abelana Horse Safaris is based at Abelana Safari Camp in the south of our beautiful reserve, surrounded by towering granite koppies and outcrops. It runs a variety of itineraries offering morning and afternoon rides in this impressive Big Five country as well as full-day and overnight safaris that explore more of the 15,000ha Abelana wilderness.
The experience of game viewing from a horse is not to be missed as it gives you a unique perspective. At the moment the bush is still dry – and will remain so until the life-giving rains arrive in November – but an upside is that a good deal of Abelana’s wildlife congregates around our dams and waterholes at this time of year, making these perfect places to include on morning and afternoon rides and even better spots to stop for refreshments and a bit of downtime. The horses love the opportunity to cool off too, so be prepared for an impromptu “swim”!
Our full-day horse safaris stop for lunch and a siesta when riders have the opportunity to rest-up in the shade for a while in hammocks or on comfortable mattresses with plump pillows. The horses get a break too and are untacked, grazing and dozing before heading out for the afternoon’s exploration.
At the end of a day in the saddle, there’s no better place to unwind after a refreshing shower in your en-suite tent than Abelana Safari Camp’s fabulous 100 square metre viewing deck, from where you can toast the setting sun with a glass or two of craft gin and tonic and some wonderful pre-dinner snacks.
Alternatively, we ride for the day over to Abelana River Lodge and spend a night in supreme luxury there on the banks of the beautiful Selati River, having the chance to cool off in the wonderful rim-flow pool while watching out for crocodiles and hippos.
